Well done to Tom Hirst (Y8) on some excellent recent results in the pool. Tom has been working very hard for Hatfield swimming club and over the weekend his club were able to win the Regional Nationals and secure a spot in Cardiff for the Nationals. Well done.

Congratulations to Elliot Breen (Y7) on finishing 68th in the Southern Inter Counties XC championships. This is a fantastic achievement, especially as Elliot still has a year left in this age group. It was Elliot’s first County vest so an excellent feat, well done.

Also a huge congratulations to all of students involved in Gym Club. The Gym show is at the end of January and many students are working very hard on perfecting their routines.

Wednesday 5th December – Y9 County League Basketball V Longdean Won 45-24
The year 9 team played their 3rd game in 3days against Longdean on Wednesday and recorded another victory. The team have been making excellent progress thanks to some very hard work from Mr McNally on a Monday lunch. The game started at a fast tempo and some excellent offense from Nat Nicholls and Dan Goldingay saw us gain an early lead. After a while it became clear that Longdean also had much to offer going down the floor and without some fortune on our part with a number of key missed lay ups were we able to come in at half time up. In the second half the team started to implement their new offense and with some excellent fast breaks from Dom Boost, we were able to stretch our lead taking the victory 45-24 and almost booking a spot in the County Semi Final with one game remaining against Hemel in the new year.

Y9 Girls Basketball
In October, we entered the U14 Girls Basketball Team into the St Albans and Harpenden Rally and finished in 2nd place, which meant that we went into the Hertfordshire Schools County Rally. Having only been playing Basketball for 2 months, the girls were incredibly pleased to make it that far. They had a shaky start to their pool matches, where in their first game they showed a real determination but narrowly lost to JFK 9-6. They had a better result in the next game where they drew with Simon Balle School. The last pool match was against Queens, whom are an experienced side, with some very good players, however, the girls dug deep and after some amazing shooting by Emily Caswell, they convincingly beat them 20–8, meaning they had made it through to the semi-finals! We came up against Meridian School, who again, were a very experienced side and although the girls defended well and scored some good baskets, towards the end of the match, Meridian pulled away to take the win. Sandringham ended up coming 3rd overall, which is an absolutely fantastic achievement, especially considering they have only been playing for 2 months. We are very proud of our team which is packed full of potential, well done Emily Mair, Emily Caswell, Chloe Pettengell, Hannah Gill, Erin Breen, Frankie Hammond, Abi Charnock, Maxime O’Malley and Charlie Boyle.

Thursday 6th December – Y11 County League V Beaumont Won 67-49
The Year 11 team played their first County League match of the season. After being postponed last week, the boys were keen to get started and put their hard work to the test against a very strong Beaumont team. At the end of the 1st quarter we had a 1 point lead over the opposition with some fantastic driving from Sam Tanton. The defensive display from Jacob Moody and Maxx Hood was exceptional and limited Beaumonts best player to minimal points. After the 3rd quarter we led 53-36 and every player had contributed. The last quarter gave the team an opportunity to experiment and look at some offensive strategies, with an eventual victory of 67-49. Well done.

Friday 7th December – Y10 National Cup Basketball V Melbourn Community School Won 56-45
On Friday the year 10 (District Champions) travelled to Cambridgeshire to tackle Melbourn Community School in their first game on a National level. This was a daunting and yet exciting prospect. The team were keen to put in a good performance and start their new challenge off well. Once the game started it quickly became evident that we were far better drilled and more talent in our team, however the harder we worked the more of a challenge we made it for ourselves. The half time score was 22-17 to the home side. Not a refelection of skill level at all. As the game wore on we started to execute our offense slightly better and eventually edged ahead in the final quarter thanks to some excellent rebounding from Alex Frankl. The eventual score was not a reflection of the hard work the team have put in, but a win nonetheless.

Saturday 17th November  - Year 8-10 Rugby  V Mount Grace

Our 3rd County Cup league game saw us matched with Mount Grace, who are usually a very physical side. The year 8 team, were again missing some key players but very quickly established possession and began creating many chances with a number of key contributions from the backs. The team ended up winning the game 26-5 with some great individual performances.

The year 9 game was a very close affair. The team went up early on with some excellent tries from a number of the boys. Mount Grace managed to use their speed out wide to edge themselves back into the game and as the final whistle drew closer the team found themselves behind. With Josh Farraway coming off the sidelines after being sin binned he used his force and power to get over the line and seal a narrow 30-26 win for the team.

The year 10 team, fresh off a victory over Chancellors ran out with a strong side, bar one key player. The team started very well with some excellent backs play and a number of forwards working hard across the front line. The team, missed one key tackle and ended up going 7-0 down just before half time. We created a number of chances and with some more experience in the team would have sealed some points. The second half saw an excellent defensive display, however once again a try was conceded leaving the game at 14-0. The team put in an excellent performance and showed much character,. Their progress this season has been fantastic and they narrowly lost a game that could have swung either way.

Year 7 County 15’s Tournament @ Nicholas Breakspear School

The year 7’s were out for only the 2nd time on Saturday and were in the annual tournament at Nicholas Breakspear. The team were drawn in group 3 with some tough opposition, alongside Verulam, Beaumont and Goffs. As the games went on the team got better and better and eventually qualified from the group into the Cup competition over the plate! The team were up against Mount Grace in the quarter final and played exceptionally well, defending at times on their 5m line. The score at the end of play was level and then again after extra time, so the result was decided on a brutal toss of a coin. The team then went through to the Semi-final to play the eventual winners Beaumont. It was a great display from all the boys and a steep learning curve that will set them up for their future games. Well done to all involved on Saturday.

Monday 19th November :
Year 8 District Netball Plate Semi-final V Roundwood Park

Well done to the year 8 girls team on reaching the District Plate Final competition with a comfortable win over Roundwood Park 16-12. Bella Maskatiya was fantastic and deserved the player of the match award. Well done and good luck in the final.

Year 11 Netball V STAGS Won 15-4 (MVP Phoebe Murray)

Year 10 Wix Shield Football V Townsend
The year 10 boys earned another victory in the Wix Sield, The oldest schools football competition in the world. They played Townsend and battled from behind to take the win 4-3 after some fantastic team displays and individual goals, including a fantastic piece of flair from Joe Lowthian. The boys go on to play Lealands from Luton this Friday afternoon. Good luck.

Congratulations to Abi Charnock and Elliot Bailey for being selected to represent Hertfordshire Schools FA. This is a huge honour and demonstrates the hard work and talent that both students have for their sport. Well done and good luck for the season.

Saturday 6th Oct – Y7/8/9/10 Football V The Cavendish School
Saturday saw us match up against Cavendish in what is normally a competitive set of fixtures. Once again the side were well matched and all teams had a good opportunity to play some attractive football. The year 7 team, who are still bonding and developing started well and were able to hold off the opposition until half time. After the break and a few changes later the side found the game tough going eventually losing 4-1. The year 8 team, without their voice of experience and authority Mr Rixon had to battle through a very close game to hold on for what looked like a draw until the dying minutes. With seconds left on the clock, Ashley Willing stepped up to a free kick and was able to cutely finish to give the team a well-earned victory 1-0. The year 9 team, who continue to leak goals again saw a flurry of goals at both ends. The team went up early on and then saw the lead change twice more. With seconds left we led 5-4 with goals from Tom Goodall (3), Aaron Jacobs and Fin Auld before a free kick was given away. With the very last kick of the game in a goal mouth scramble Cavendish equalised to take it to 5-5. The year 10 team, who have by far enjoyed the most success this season again put in an excellent performance as described by Mr Owen as, ‘Man United circa 1994’ won 4-1 with goals from Joe Lowthian, Sian Khan (2) and Harry Fennell.

Monday 8th Oct
Y10 District League Basketball V Roundwood Park – Won 35-28
The Year 10 boys went into Mondays fixture versus Roundwood Park unbeaten in the district league. The team were missing some key players and looking slightly depleted, however this gave others a fantastic opportunity to show how good they are. The team played below their best but remained in control of the game. Some excellent performances from Keni Akutu, Alex Frankl, Dom Boost and Dan Mair were enough to hold off Roundwood and the team ran out 35-28 winners, keeping their record intact.

Y9 District Netball V Beaumont – Won 10-4
After some very competitive and close matches, Beaumont had narrowly won by one goal the last time these two teams faced each other. Sandringham were determined that the next time they played Beaumont that they would come out victorious and so they showed true commitment in attending extra training sessions in the run up to this match. The weather made the game conditions even tougher but Sandringham came out in the first quarter full of determination and gained an early lead. By half time the score was 7-2 with Jazz Fisher showing strength and confidence in her shooting. In the second half, Beaumont came out fighting but our defence, Emily Mair and Chloe Pettengell used their training to shut down the centre passes and give Sandringham possession. The end score was 10-4 to Sandringham who played some of their best netball despite the pressure from the opposition. Most Valuable Player goes to Frankie Hammond. Well done to the whole team.

Thursday 27th September – Y10 Girls Basketball V JFK (County League)
Sandringham school played their first ever girls basketball game, against JFK, last year’s district and county champions. The girls started slow as expected in their first game ever. However they soon picked it up, lead well by Elizabeth Tanton and Chloe Pettengel working hard. Abi Charnock worked hard for rebounds.  A good start to their first campaign, Emily Caswell was top point scorer with 6. However MVP goes to Izzy Hanton for a superb performance, excellent on defence and offence. The second half performance was outstanding and we drew 4-4 with them in the 4th quarter. Despite this we lost 45-14.
Sam Tanton 11D (Team Coach)

Friday 28th September Y7 Basketball V Beaumont
As half of the Year 7 students were away in the Peak District the basketball team, for their first fixture were limited to a fraction of the 47 man squad leaving only 23 to play. The game was a training match against Beaumont and a first opportunity for the boys to play the sport. It was a steep learning curve for all involved and gave the team an opportunity to play and develop an understanding of the rules whilst also practise their newly developed skills with one another. There were some excellent individual performances and the aim of the evening was to introduce all to the competitive elements of the sport.

Saturday 29th September Y7,8,9,10 Football V Sir John Lawes
Saturday saw the boys football teams return to action against Sir John Lawes. This is an annual fixture that often provides some of the toughtest games of the year. All 4 teams showed character and passion and have begin to gel well as team units. The outcome was 2 wins and 2 losses. The year 7’s after a good early start lost their way in the second half and eventually came out 2nd best 0-4. The year 8’s, with a few key players absent ended up winning emphatically 9-0. The Year 9’s played exceptionally well in the first half, however lost their fight late on and as their heads dropped lost 4-0. The Year 10’s showed again just how strong they are with a 5-2 win over the opposition with a magnificent display.
